You just had a baby. Your body is going through so many changes at once, including transforming its shape and size. How are you supposed to figure out what to wear for photos? Let me walk you through what I tell my clients before their photo session.

What colors work best with the decor in your home? Think of colors that compliment your home’s aesthetic, not match it. Also, opt for more muted colors instead of bright and bold. Bright, saturated colors convey high energy which is usually not the vibe at a newborn session. We want the mood to be calm and soothing while you’re holding your precious new bundle of joy. Bright colored clothing can also cast that color onto someone you are close to or something you are holding. This can alter skin tones in an unfavorable way.
When in doubt dress in light neutrals. They won’t clash with the colors in your home and they won’t cast color on your baby.

Being comfortable is a must. Flowy dresses, comfy sweaters and maternity jeans or even a lounge wear set are all great options. Bonus points for breastfeeding friendly outfits if that is part of your feeding journey and want photos of it. If you can (and I know this one is hard) get a manicure, or at least make sure your nails are trimmed and cleaned. Your hands will be in a lot of photos holding your newborn.
Dads can wear jeans or cotton pants and a simple T-shirt, henley or button up. One recommendation I have for all family members is NO socks! Bare feet is always the best option.

Baby can wear a simple onesie, sleeper or sleeping gown (I love the ones you can knot at the bottom). We will start with baby in their own clothes and end the session with them in a swaddle I have brought. In my booking questionnaire there will be a part where you can let me know what colors you would like for the wrapped baby portion of the session. I will bring fabric options along with optional head accessories (headbands, bonnets, sleeper caps) for you to choose from.
For siblings, keep it simple. In fact, you likely have a few outfit options already on hand. Shop their closet for jeans or cotton pants to pair with a neutral top, or a romper or casual sun dress. Well fitting clothes are important. You don’t want to be constantly adjusting their oversized shirt or pulling up their sagging pants. Avoid characters, logos and text on clothing which can distract and draw attention away from your family’s faces.
